India has various physical features like the mountains, plains, islands, deserts and coastal plains. The Himalayan rivers (Ganga and Brahmaputra) are perennial rivers which have water in them through the year. Apart from it, peninsular rivers like Godavari and Krishna are also used for transporting goods from one place to the other. India has inland navigation waterways of 14,500 km in length. Canals, backwaters, and lakes are used as inland waterways. Inland waterways are the cheapest means of transportation.
