Coal is a fossil fuel.Coal is a complex mixture of compounds of carbon,hydrogen,oxygen and some free carbon.If fossil fuels are formed without the presence of oxygen how will coal contain compounds of oxygen.

Fossil fuels developed from dead (plant and animal) biomass that was converted in fuels by being exposed to high pressure and heat in absence of oxygen. Coal is mixture of various compounds. Here Oxygen that you' reffering is present in form of water or any other compound. When we say, absence of oxygen, We are referring about oxygen (O2 ).
