an object moves in straight line. its instantaneous velocity is negative and its instataneous acceleration is positive

Here we have been given that acceleration is negative and velocity is positive, if the forward motion of the body is considered as positive then backward motion would be negatve and it indicate that the direction of application of force is opposite to that of motion of the object. Hence the object will retard, it stops at some point of time and if the force continues to act on it, it will start moving in the direction of application of force.
