Let begin mathsize 14px style bold a with bold rightwards arrow on top end style and begin mathsize 14px style bold b with bold rightwards arrow on top end style are two given vectors as shown in figure. To get the sum  begin mathsize 14px style bold a with bold rightwards arrow on top end style+begin mathsize 14px style bold b with bold rightwards arrow on top end style , 
we form the two  vectors as sides of parallelogram as shown in figure.

Then the diagonal of the parallelogram represents begin mathsize 14px style bold a with bold rightwards arrow on top end style+begin mathsize 14px style bold b with bold rightwards arrow on top end style in magnitude as well as direction
