A wedg ewith mass M rests on a frictionless horizontal tabletop . A block with mass m is placed on the wedge There is no friction between the block and the wedge the system is released from rest . calculate the acceleration of the wedge.

Expert Answer
Since centre of mass is not moving, acceleration of centre of mass is zero.
If am is acceleration of block of mass m and aM is acceleration of wedge of mass M,
then we have , m × am + M × aM = 0
hence we get, aM = -(m/M) × am = -(m/M)×gsinθ
where g is acceleration due to gravity and θ is angle of wedge as shown in figure
