answered-by-expert Expert Answer
when a homogeneous solid sphere floats in oil over mercury, such that half volume in mercury and other half in oil,

then we have,  V×ρs×g = (V/2)×ρm×g + (V/2)×ρo×g  ...................(1)

where V is volume of sphere, ρs , ρm and ρo are densities of sphere, mercury and oil respectively.

eqn.(1) is simplified as, ρs = ( ρm/2 ) + ( ρo /2)  =  (13.6+0.8)/2 = 7.2 g/cc
