A rod kept vertically on a smooth horizontal surface at a point p . The rod is slightly tilted and released . Show that path followed by any other point except center of mass is elliptical

Expert Answer
There is no force acting on horizontal direction, hence centre of mass (CM) does not move in horizontal direction,
only vertical motion for CM due to gravity. Hence as shown in figure CM remais same at horizontal position
but endpoints are displaced in horizontal position as shown in figure resulting elliptical path for all points except CM
