A nickel bar magnet is heated to 500oC and then cooled in free space, which is devoid of any magnetic field. Will the bar retain magnetism?

No, the bar will not retain magnetism. This is because at Curie temperature (358oC), nickel becomes paramagnetic and loses its magnetism on heating further. When cooled in a magnetic field free space, the bar does not retain its magnetism.
