ICSE Class 9 Answered
A man bought a certain number of chairs for ?10,000.He kept one for his own use and sold the rest at the rate ?50 more than he gave for one chair.Besides getting his own chair for nothing,he made a profit of?450 .How many chairs did he buys?

Let the number of chairs be y.
Cost of each chair = 10000/y
Numbers of chairs sold = y - 1
SP per chair = (10000/y) + 50
SP of 50 chairs = (y - 1) [(10000/y) + 50]
SP - CP = Profit
(y - 1) [(10000/y) + 50] - 10000 = 450
Solving this we get y = 20
Number of chairs bought y a man is 20.
