Ashoka was the greatest king of the Mauryan dynasty. In his young days as prince, he exhibited exceptional military skills by supressing revolts at Ujjain and Taxila. He succeeded the throne in 273 BC. In around 260 BC, he annexed the state of Kalinga as it was located on strategic trade and pilgrim route. It is estimated that about 100,000 people died and many more were injured. This war filled Ashoka with remorse and he became Buddhist and began to follow the principles of peace and non violence. He started the policy of 'Dhamma' which stressed on truth, non violence and compassion. Apart from it, he started many welfare activities for the benifit of the common people.
He unified the nation into one single unit. The Mauryan Empire reached its zenith under him. His empire extended from the present day Eastern Iran to Bangladesh and Assam in north to Kerala in south.
He was truly a great and powerful ruler of India who not only ruled efficiently over the vast Indian empire but also laid the foundation of welfare state in India.
