Which is the substance being oxidised and reduced in the reaction of sodium and chlorine gas to form sodium chloride and why?

Oxidation --- Addition of oxygen or losing of electrons is oxidation.
 
Reduction-- Addition of hydrogen or gain of electrons is reduction.
 
In this reaction sodium is losing electrons to form cation. This is oxidation.
 
Similarly, chlorine is being reduced as it gains electron.
