I have heard that in solids, atoms are held very closely by strong intermolecular forces. But why in this crystalline solids image atoms are held so far apart? Please help:)

In solids there is very less intermolecular space but to understand the packing the diagrams shows space.because it is very difficult to understand the packing in closed structure.
