Reducing character of element in aqueous solutions increases with increase in hydration enthalpy.
Lower are ionization energy values, greater is the tendency to lose ns1 electron to change in M+ ion and therefore stronger is electropositive character.
Good reducing agents include the active metals, such as sodium, magnesium, aluminum, and zinc, which have relatively small ionization energies and low electro-negativities.
