  1. The nationalist historiography developed in response to the partial description of the Indian history by the colonial historians. The nationalistic historiography provided a momentum to the writing of regional histories too. Historians began to write about the past of various geographical regions in India. History of south Indian regions now began to be written.
  2. 'Bakhar' is an important type of historical document of medieval times as it gives us information about that period. It contains eulogies of the heroes and stories of historic events, battles and lives of great men.

    • VK Rajawade was a Marathi writer who wrote on various subjects like history, linguistics, etymology and grammar
    • He compiled and edited 22 volumes of 'Marathyanchya Itihasachi Sadhane'.
    • He believed that one should write his own history and it should be used only after using the authentic and reliable sources.
    • He further said that 'History is the all-inclusive image of the past societies. It does not include only the political poweror the wars fought for capturing power.

  1. Orientalist historiography: It refers to the historians who appreciated and respected the culture and traditions of the East. These scholars were known as Orientalists.
    The Orientalists studied the similarities between Sanskrit and some European languages. They focused more on Vedic tradition and Sanskrit literature.
  2. Nationalistic historiography: Those Indian historians who criticised the British colonial policies and exhibited the greatness and glory of India's past are known as nationalist historians. Their writings are known as nationalistic historiography.

  3. Subaltern history: Till recently, history highlighted the achievements of kings and policymakers. It was all about wars and politics. But later, it was realised that history should also be written from the viewpoint of the suppressed and depressed classes of society. Thus, the subaltern history deals with the exploitation of lower classes in the society. The seeds of subaltern history are found in the Marxist historiography.
