Class 8 NCERT Solutions English Chapter 7 - The Open Window

The Open Window Exercise 57

Solution 1

Framton Nuttel came to the rural retreat as he wanted a cure for the bad nerves he was suffering from.

Solution 2

His sister had given him letters of introduction to people living there as she knew that since he did not know anyone he would bury himself there without speaking to a living soul and his nerves would only get worse from moping.

Solution 3

The niece narrated that three years ago a tragedy took place in the Sappleton family. Her aunt's husband and her two young brothers went off for their day’s shooting. They never came back. In crossing the moor to their favourite shooting ground they were all three engulfed in a treacherous piece of bog. It had been a dreadful wet summer and places that were safe in other years gave way suddenly without warning. Their bodies were never recovered.

The Open Window Exercise 60

Solution 1

Mrs Sappleton said that the window was opened because her husband and brothers would be home directly from shooting, and they always came in that way. They had been out for snipe in the marshes that day, so they would make a fine mess over her poor carpets.

Solution 2

The horror on the girl’s face made Framton swing around in his seat and look in the same direction. In the deepening twilight he saw three figures walking across the lawn towards the window, they all carried guns under their arms, and one of them was additionally burdened with a white coat hung over his shoulders. A tired brown spaniel kept close at their heels.

The Open Window Exercise 61

Solution 1

Framton rushed out wildly because he thought that he saw the ghosts of the three men who he was told were dead coming in through the window.

Solution 2

The girl's explanation of his lightning exit was that he had a horror of dogs. He was once hunted into a cemetery somewhere on the banks of the Ganges by a pack of dogs, and had to spend the night in a newly dug grave with the creatures snarling and grinning and foaming just above him, enough to make anyone lose their nerve.
