Three ways in which the lives of farmers and herders would have been different from hunter–gatherers:
- The farmers started leading a settled life by building houses for themselves instead of leading a nomadic life unlike the hunter-gatherers who moved from place to place.
- The farmers started producing food instead of gathering food which helped them to have more food than required for the entire family. Whereas the hunter-gatherers gathered their food and ate it uncooked.
- The farmers used various kinds of tools which were polished to give a fine-cutting edge such as mortars and pestles while hunter gatherers continued to use stone made tools.

Archaeologists think that many people who lived in Mehrgarh were hunters to start with because at the earlier levels many kinds of bones were found which belonged to wild animals such as deer and pig. However, in later levels, more bones of sheep, goats and cattle were found suggesting that these animals were generally kept by the people of Mehrgarh.
