Patol Babu, Film Star Exercise 67

Solution 3a

Nishikanto Ghosh told Patol Babu that his youngest brother-in-law worked in the production department of the film industry. He was looking for an actor for a scene in a film and Patol Babu fit his requirements. Nishikanto Ghosh had therefore given him his address so he could get in touch with him.

Solution 3b

Patol Babu was excited when he was given an opportunity to act in a film.  That such an offer had been made to him at the age of 52 was unbelievable and something he had longed for.

Solution 3c

Patol Babu lost his first job in Calcutta where he had worked for nine years because of sudden retrenchment in his office due to the war.

Solution 3d

Initially, Patol Babu was upset by the dialogue he was given. He was supposed to exclaim "Oh" which he thought was very strange. He suspected that the film people had taken him for a fool. Sosanko then explained to him that a speaking part in a Baren Mullik film, even if it was just a single word, was a great thing. There were others in the movie who were not as fortunate as he was.

He was about to walk away when he remembered the advice given to him by Mr. Pakrashi, his mentor, telling him that no matter how small a part you have been offered, never consider it beneath your dignity to accept it. As an artist, your aim should be to make the most of your opportunity and squeeze the last drop of meaning out of your lines. He also said that each word in a play was like a fruit on a tree and only the actor knew how to pluck it, get its essence and serve it  to the audience. These words helped him reconcile to the dialogue given to him and allowed him to perform his part with conviction.

Solution 3e

Mr Gogon Pakrashi was Patol Babu's mentor. He was a wonderful actor with not a trace of vanity in him. He was a saintly man and a fine actor.

His advice to Patol Babu was that no matter how small a part one has been offered never consider it beneath one's dignity to accept it.

His words inspired Patol Babu and made him realise his folly. He cleared his throat and rehearsed his part several times. He worked hard at inventing various ways to enunciate the dialogue by giving it various kinds of emotions.

Pakrashi's advice thus gave him the energy and dignity to carry out his part with perfection and dedication even though it was just a single syllable.

Solution 3f

Patol Babu was a meticulous man. Even before he knew what his dialogue was, he asked his wife to remind him to take some ginger juice to clear his throat.

He insisted on being called Patol Babu which was his stage name, instead of Atul Babu. This shows his dedication towards his art.

He was punctual and reached the shoot at the right time.

When he was told that the dialogue consisted of just a monosyllable "oh", he was upset at first. Later, he remembered the words of his mentor. He began giving the exclamation a different inflection each time he uttered it. Half an hour before his scene, he decided to rehearse some more. He also worked on his body language while enunciating the syllable.

He finally delivered his line with perfection and dedication.

Solution 3g

Mr. Mullick turned down Patol Babu's request for a rehearsal because a large patch of cloud occluding the sunlight was disrupting the shoot.

Solution 3h

Patol Babu wished to improvise the scene by making it look as if he was reading a newspaper while the collision happened.  A moustache was stuck below Patol Babu's nose to make it more interesting. He then meticulously calculated the speed at which he was supposed to walk order to collide with Chanchal Kumar. While saying 'Oh!' he had planned to enunciate it by mixing sixty parts of irritation with forty parts of surprise. He did all this to make his role more authentic.

Solution 4a

These lines were said By Patol Babu when he was asked by Naresh Dutt to act in a film.

Patol Babu was at one time a brilliant actor and had a passion for the stage..

Many years later, at the age of 52, someone had asked him to act again. He was surprised and excited to receive the offer. He had to play the role of a pedestrian. Being an actor, he knew that dialogues were important to the story and so he asked whether his role had a dialogue in it.

Solution 4b

Patol Babu had been very excited about his role, and this was his first attempt in a film. But the dialogue given to him was a mere "Oh" that he was supposed to exclaim on colliding with the actor. Now he was convinced that the film people were playing a cruel joke on him. He was always considered a very good actor and he felt by giving him such a small insignificant part they were only making a mockery of him.

Solution 4c

Patol Babu was an amateur actor. In the film he had to play the part of an absent minded pedestrian who collided with the hero Chanchal Kumar. When Patol Babu was told that his dialogue in the film was just a monosyllable "Oh!" he was first surprised then disappointed, hurt and angry. He was convinced it was all a cruel joke they were playing on him. He was about to walk away when he remembered the advice given to him by Mr. Pakrashi his mentor telling him no matter how small a part you have been offered never consider it beneath your dignity to accept it.

Motivated by these words he began to rehearse the syllable giving it a different inflection each time he uttered it. A true actor, he now decided to take on the ultimate challenge and make a mark with this one single syllable. He also meticulously worked out how he would react physically when the collision took place. He practiced all this in front of a large glass window.

He finally carried out his path in the film with perfection and dedication. Satisfied with a job well done he walked away without waiting to receive the wages due to him.

Patol Babu, Film Star Exercise 68

Solution 4e

Even though he had to utter just a monosyllable in the play Patol Babu did his part to perfection. A feeling of total satisfaction now swept over him. He was convinced that his mentor Gogon Pakrashi would have been pleased with his performance.

Although Patol Babu needed the money, he felt that, the small amount of ten or twenty rupees that they gave him would never measure up to the immense satisfaction he had received by performing the small role with such perfection and dedication. He was a true actor who had a high self esteem. He therefore walked away without waiting to be paid for the role he had performed.
