Religious tourism is undertaken for visiting a religious place for worship or for pilgrimage. For example, visit to Kedarnath.

Cultural tourism refers to visiting to cultural attractions to gather new information and experience. For example, Portuguese tourists visiting Goa to participate in the Goa carnival.

Objectives of tourism is to gather information, to relieve work related stress, availing health facilities, to experience village life, to see new places and to get pleasure.

• Tourism is good for environmental development as the government spends on natural locations, sanctuaries, national parks, etc. to attract tourists.
• However, some tourists may litter wastes and pollute the environment.
• It is important for the tourists to follow the concept of eco-tourism. Eco-tourism includes taking precautions of not degrading and polluting the environment as well as not damaging tourist places.
• n eco-friendly tourism, factors like designing houses, resorts, traffic routes are designed in an eco-friendly manner in which electricity and water are used judiciously.
• The concept of recycling and reuse is also applied in eco-friendly tourism.

• Economic development: Tourism helps in bringing much needed foreign exchange into the country. It also boasts local economy.
• Environmental development: Due to the Eco-friendly tourism concept, tourist places are developed while caring for the environment like eco-tourism.
• Health: Opportunities to avail health facilities develop with tourism like Indian Ayurveda, Yoga, Pranayam.
• Social Developments: Tourism creates social consciousness among tourists which helps in the development of neglected components of the society. For example, visit to tribal villages.

Problems at tourist places:

• Lack of cleanliness and hygiene
• Lack of adequate transportation
• Lack of good clean budget hotels
• Crimes and thefts

Measures that can be taken to solve the problems:

• Make local people aware of the importance of keeping their cities clean.
• Government should make arrangements or tie up with the local agencies to provide the tourists with good transportation facilities.
• Efforts should be made by the state governments to open small clean budget hotels for tourists.
• A team of local people should be made to keep a watch on petty thefts and other crimes. CCTV cameras can also be placed at important locations.

• In Thane district of Mumbai, many places can be developed as tourist centres.
• Many tribals reside in the villages of Thane district. There is a lot of scope of develop cultural tourism here.
• Thane district has a lot of beautiful beaches and can develop as a tourist destination.

• Places of cultural and religious significance or with scenic beauty develop as a tourist place. This provides opportunities to the local people to open various businesses like setting up hotels, eateries etc.

• This tagline has been used by the ministry of tourism to educate the people about how the tourists should be treated.
• The concept gives messages to local people like shopkeepers, hotel staff and guides to respect the tourists.
• If tourists are treated well, they will depart with good memories and ask other people to also visit the place. This will in turn improve the economy of the local tourist place.
• This concept also educates the tourists to behave well and do not mistreat local people and spoil a beautiful place.
