Humans cannot survive without water. Water is required for cultivation of crops and for domestic consumption, hence, availability of water is a major factor affecting settlements.

Solution 2(b)

The eastern coastal plains of Brazil have moderate temperature. The land is flat and is suitable for cultivation. Water is also adequately available. Agriculture and industries have flourished well here. Hence, majority of population is found in the eastern coastal areas.

Urbanisation is increasing in India because of the rapid growth of population. Establishment of industries and expansion of towns are attracting people from rural areas leading to the urbanisation in the country.

North-eastern Brazil suffers from severe droughts and hence cultivation is limited. Thus, Settlements are sparse in this part of the country.

  • Growth of urbanisation in India has been slow. In 2011, the rate of urbanization was 31.6% which was quite low as compared to the developed countries.
  • Urbanisation has been more in the southern part than in the Northern part of India.
  • Urbanisation in Brazil has been more in the coastal states of south and southeast than the states in the interior of the west and north.

  • There are several factors that determine the growth of human settlements. Climate, availability of water, flat and fertile plains and availability of minerals are some factors that influence the human settlements.
  • The Northern Indian Plains are flat and fertile suitable for cultivation. Hence, it is densely populated.
  • The Amazon Basin in Brazil is covered with dense forests and receive heavy rainfall. Inaccessibility of the region makes it sparsely populated.
