The largest side in a right-angled triangle is a hypotenuse.

The man makes a right angle when moving from east to west.

So, the distance covered will be a hypotenuse

By Pythagoras theorem, hyptonenuse² = base² + perpendicular² = (10)² + (24)²

= 26 

The ladder and the wall form a right-angled triangle.

The ladder is the hypotenuse = 25 m; height of the window is 20 m

By Pythagoras theorem,

hyptonenuse² = base² + perpendicular² 25² = (x)² + (24)²x² = 625 - 576 = 49

∴ x = 7
