Bromine will add to the carbon-carbon double bond of alkenes to produce dibromoalkanes and with alkynes to produce tetrabromoalkanes.  When this reaction occurs, molecular bromine is consumed,  and its characteristic dark red?brown color disappears if bromine is not added in excess.
