a firecracker exploding on the surface of a lake is heard as two sounds a time interval 't' apart by a man on a boat close to water surface. sound travels with a speed 'u' in water and 'v' in air. the distance from the exploding firecracker to the boat is?

take time taken by sound to travel to the boat through water=Tw
take time taken by sound to travel to the boat through air=Ta
Ta-Tw=t=d/v    -  d/u   , where d is the distance of the plce of explosion from the boat.
so,   d= tuv/(u-v)
