  1. Tsunami in the Indian Ocean: In 2004, an earthquake measuring 9 on the Richter scale led to destructive tsunamis on to the coasts of the south east Asian countries. The tsunami caused large scale destruction in Indonesia, Thailand, northwest coast of Malaysia, Bangladesh, Maldives, and India. The tsunami travelled at a speed of 800 km/ hour. The Indira Point in Andaman and Nicobar Islands was completely submerged in water as a result of the giant waves. In India, the coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kereka, Pondicherry and Andaman Nicobar Islands were affected.

     

  2. Tsunami in Japan: An earthquake off the Pacific Ocean in Japan resulted in powerful tsunami waves on March 11, 2011 in the Japanese coastal areas. These waves were as high as 40.5 meters. Lakhsof people were affected due to this tsunami. Besides affecting human lives, the tsunami caused much structural damage in Japan. Many dams, roads, railway bridges etc. were damaged. The Japanese nuclear reactor was also severely affected due to the tsunami.
