The art of the Mauryan period was greatly influenced by Buddhist philosophy. Ashoka built as many as 84,000 stupas throughout his kingdom. Stupas are solid, semicircular, dome-like structures made of stone and brick. The relics of Buddha, such as hair and tooth, were placed at the base of the stupas. The stupa of Sanchi is an excellent example of Mauryan architecture.
