According to the census of 2011, population of India has crossed one billion marks. Though India has only 2.4 per cent of the world’s area, it accounts for 16.7 per cent of the population.

The population density of India in 2011 was 364 persons per sq km. Within India, the population density is highly uneven. While the state of West Bengal has the population density of 904 persons per sq km, Arunachal Pradesh has a population density of only 12 persons per sq km.
