Silk cloth was made for the first time in China. Silkworms were reared on mulberry trees. Chinese silk was very popular in international markets, and it was the main item of import during the ancient and medieval times. The Chinese kept the art of spinning silk a secret until 5th century CE. Till then, silk manufacture and business remained a monopoly of the Chinese.
