Each Greek city state worshipped its own local gods. However, all Greeks also believed in the family of gods which lived on Mount Olympus. Zeus was considered to be the king of gods and his wife Hera was the goddess of home. The most important of Zeus’s children were Athena (goddess of wisdom), Apollo (god of music), Aphrodite (goddess of love), Ares (god of war) and Hermes (the messenger of the gods). It was believed that such gods and goddesses spoke to people through their priests and priestesses.
