The Mesopotamians were polytheists. Every city had its own patron deity. Forces of nature such as Sun, Moon, rain and stars were worshipped by them. The king was considered the chief priest and the messenger of God on Earth. In later years, the king began to appoint priests to look after the ziggurat, and resultantly, the priestly class gained in prominence. There is a possibility that Mesopotamians also believed in life after death because drinking vessels, ornaments and weapons have been found buried in graves.
