King Narasimhavarman I was the son and successor of Mahendravarman. He is hailed as the greatest ruler of the Pallava dynasty. During his reign, the Pallavas reached the pinnacle of their power. He laid the foundation of the new city of Mahabalipuram (now Mamallapuram) and ordered the building of many excellent rock-cut temples in it.
