During the Later Vedic period, the gods of the Early Vedic period lost their significance and instead Brahma (the creator), Vishnu (the preserver) and Shiva (the destroyer) gained in prominence in the popular imagination. The ways of worshipping of gods also became very complex. Extensive rituals and sacrifices were prescribed and performed in order to please the gods. As a result, the social standing of the brahamanas rose. This was because only they could perform the complicated rituals.
