Expert Answer
‘Shoe respect’ rule was promulgated by the British insisting that Indians should take off their shoes while appearing before them as a mark of showing respect to them. However, the rule was not strictly followed. Later, Lord Dalhousie made the rule stricter and declared that all Indians should take off their shoes before entering any government institution. However, Indians wearing European clothes were exempted from this rule.
The Indians opposed this rule as taking their shoes off would result in their feet getting dirty and filthy. It was only after several years that shoes were permitted in the courtroom.
