why does an iron block sink in water but float in mercury ?

Expert Answer
If density of solid is less than the density of liquid, solid will float in that liquid. If density of solid is greater than the density of liquid, solid will sink in that liquid.
density of Iron = 7874 kg/m3, density of mercury 13690 kg/m3, density of water 1000 kg/m3
Hence iron will sink in water, but float in mercury
