Expert Answer
The Sumptuary laws were a set of laws which prevailed in the French society from 1294 to 1789. These laws aimed at controlling the behaviour of the lower classes in France by restricting them from wearing certain dresses and consuming some of the food and beverages. According to these laws, a person should purchase clothes in France not according to his income but according to his social rank. Only people belonging to royal households and nobility could wear clothes made out of expensive materials like silk, velvet and brocade.
