What was the impact of Buddhism on art and architecture

Buddhism impacted the art and architecture in many ways:
- Caves are the oldest forms of Buddhist architecture. The Buddhist caves trace their origin in around 100 BCE. The most significant of them is Ajanta caves.
- During the same period, a number of stupas, chaityas, viharas and pillars were constructed in Sanchi, Bodh-Gaya, Mathura, Gandhara, Amaravati and Nagarjunakonda. Though most of these have not remained in their entirety, the ruins are of architectural interest.
- The stupas were the semi spherical dome like structures which contained the relics of Buddha. The Stupas at Sanchi, Amravati and Bharhut have survived till today.
- Chaityas were rectangular halls with semi circular roofs supported by number of columns.
- Various large statues of Buddha were made during this period.
