During the reign of the Guptas, the art of painting in India reached its zenith in India. A prime example of this is the magnificent fresco paintings in the Ajanta caves. The art of sculpturing also developed and many fine statues of Buddha have been discovered buried in Sarnath. The seating Buddha statue is considered to be the finest example of the Gupta school of sculpture. Excellent lifelike statues of Hindu gods and goddesses have also been discovered. The Guptas also constructed rock-cut chaityas and temples of stone and brick. The Vishnu temple at Deogarh and the Buddhist chaityas in the Ajanta caves are good examples of Gupta architecture.
