Let we add A to x⁴ - x³ + x² + x + 3 to obtain x⁴ + x² - 1
A + x⁴ - x³ + x² + x + 3 = x⁴ + x² - 1
To find A, we will subtract x⁴ - x³ + x² + x + 3 from x⁴ + x² - 1
A = (x⁴ + x² - 1) - (x⁴ - x³ + x² + x + 3)
A = x⁴ + x² - 1 - x⁴ + x³ - x² - x - 3
A = -1 + x³ - x -3
A = x³ - x - 4
Hence x³ - x - 4 must be added.
