Buddha’s name was Siddhartha in his childhood. He was the son of a chief of the Sakya clan. He had a sheltered upbringing within the palace. One day, he asked his charioteer to take him into the city. His journey through the city was painful. He saw an old man, a sick man and a dead man. He was disturbed to see their condition. Then he met an ascetic who had appeared to him to have had come to terms with old age, disease and death. These incidents changed Buddha's attitude towards the life. He  decided to become a saint. After years of meditation, he finally attained enlightenment. He came to be known as ‘Buddha.’
