Tenses give us the information about the period about which the sentence is describing about.
At the simplest level,it could be a past, present or a future tense.
Thereare other types of tenses as well, and they are:
Past Perfect: I had studied English before shifting to England.
Present Perfect: I have studied English before shifting to England.
The past perfect expresses an action that occurred before another action in the past.
More examples:
Jatin had gone to the temple before going to the exam hall.
Meera had opened the parachute before jumping off the plane.
The present perfect expresses an action that happened before an unspecified time before now

Samuel She has yelled at mother several times.
Mithila has endured a lot because of the unjust king.
