what is diffrence between penumbra and umbra

When a shadow is cast by the object, the shadow formed has two parts the umbra and penumbra. The umbra is the darkest part of the shadow where the the object obstructs all light falling on it. The penumbra is the lighter shadow, where the object partially blocks the light falling on it.
