A gerund is a word that looks like an “ing” form of a verb, but it acts as a noun in a sentence. These words have the qualities of both nouns and verbs.
Reading is my hobby.
Here “reading” is a name given to an activity and all names are nouns. But it also represents an action, so it has the quality of a verb as well.
Participles are defined as words that are formed from verbs but have the qualities of adjectives. Participles are grouped into two categories according to their tenses—past participle and present participle.
Present participles end in –ing.
Example:
The captain went down with the sinking ship.
Eating a bowl full of cornflakes, Rajesh answered the door.
Past participles end in –ed or –en.
Example: Mr Shatrugan was impressed by the new intern.
