Two organic compounds X and Y containing carbon and hydrogen anly have vapour densities 13 and 39 respectively.State the molecular formula of X and Y.

Answer:
Molecular weight = 2 x vapor density
Molecular wt of Compund X = 2 x 13 = 26
As it contains only C and H, molecular weight 26 will comprise = C2H2
 
Molecular wt of Compund Y = 2 x 39 = 78
As it contains only C and H, molecular weight 78 will comprise 
 
= C6H6
