I believe that you have chosen to speak in favour of the statement “We are raising a generation of computer literate illiterates”.

Please use the following points to prepare your speech:

This generation of millennials have a big problem ahead of them; over-dependence on technology and gadgets.

The technology boom has introduced sophisticated gadgets in our lives, no doubt, and these gadgets have made our lives hassle-free. But I have noticed that people are now dependant on technology even for the simplest of things. Like for example, we are perfectly capable of doing simple math, but nowadays we just resort to a calculator to find the answers on the simple calculation in the supermarket or at the vegetable vendor.

Another scenario where I feel we are raising a generation of computer literate illiterates is people struggling with basic words and spellings. They keep looking at the spellings of simple words wondering if the ‘i’ should come before the ‘e’ or after in words such as ‘believe’ and ‘receive’, whether they should use ‘QUIET’ or ‘QUEIT’, whether some words will have a ‘single l’ or a ‘double l’, and so on. It is not beyond the intelligence of an average human being to have basic language skills without technology at their disposal, is it?

Nowadays its now all about instant messaging, instant calculators, instant answers from Google, and even instant spell check on the computer, where you can just blindly accept or ignore the suggested changes. There is no effort and work being put in by people these days. It is sad. Before, there was no typing of essays or homework. Everything was handwritten, and a lot more hours were spent on productive learning.

Everything is so easy these days. Our next generation has applications and shortcuts for everything. Before there is a problem, there is an escape route. It is scary that this is the generation that will take over the world someday. And it is scarier that we will have raised a generation of computer literate illiterates.
