State the compulsory and optional functions of the Gram Panchayat.

The Panchayati Raj is a basic unit of the Panchayati Raj system. It has many functions. These functions include compulsory functions as well as optional functions.

1. The various compulsory functions of the Gram Panchayat are:

 i. Providing health facilities by setting up dispensaries and health centres.

 ii. Looking after the welfare of the weaker sections of society.

 iii. Constructing and repairing roads bridges, drains, wells and tanks.

 iv. Supplying clean drinking water.

 v. Keeping the roads and streets clean.

 vi. Providing primary education.

 vii. Constructing buildings and maintenance of cremation and burials grounds.

 viii. Helping the farmer to develop and improve the farm output and cattle.

 ix. Checking on the spread of disease and providing vaccination and inoculation to cure it.

 x. Recording births and deaths


2. The optional functions are:

 i. Organisation of fairs and village markets.

 ii. Construction of playgrounds and rest houses

 iii. Organisation of educational and awareness programmes.

 iv. Installation of television and radio sets in the community sets.
