Five compulsory functions of the Municipal Corporation are:

1. Establishment and maintenance of primary and secondary schools and adult education centres. It promotes adult education and literacy programmes and also takes care of educational and cultural activities.
2. Construction and maintenance of roads, public buildings, bridges, crematoria, graveyards and street lighting.
3. Providing supply of safe drinking water. Maintaining tanks.
4. Maintenance of birth and death records.
5. To keep a check on the quality of food sold in shops, markets and restaurants.
