Why does the author say that by being in love, Hughie had made things 'worse'?

The protagonist, Hughie Erskine, as described by the author, is wonderfully good-looking, with his crisp brown hair, his clear-cut profile, and his grey eyes; equally popular with men and women thanks to his sparkling personality. However, Hughie lived on two hundred a year that an old aunt allowed him. The only thing he struggled with was money. He was not aware that it is better to have a permannent income than to be fascinating; the truths of modern life. He worked in the Stock Exchange for six months. He had been a tea-merchant for a little longer, but had soon tired of pekoe and souchong. Then he had tried selling dry sherry but that did not answer; the sherry was a little too dry. Ultimately, he became nothing, a delightful, ineffectual young man with a perfect profile and no profession. So, inspite of these troubles, he is in love with Laura Merton, the daughter of a retired Colonel who is known for his short-temperness. The author find this as 'worse' because inspite of being in a relationship, Hughie does not care about making a living on his own.
