1. What are the components of an ecosystem?

Ans: An ecosystem consists of two main components:

(a) Biotic component: Living components of the ecosystem

E.g. Animals, Plants

(b) Abiotic component: Non-living components of the ecosystem

E.g. Water, Air

2. What is a food pyramid? What is the role of the food pyramid in the functioning of ecosystems?

Ans:

A graphical representation of various trophic levels of a food chain in an ecosystem is called an ecological pyramid or a food pyramid.

Role of the food pyramid in the functioning of ecosystems:

The trophic levels in a food chain can be explained with the help of a food pyramid.

The ecological pyramids help us to understand the structure, functional diversity and energy conversion efficiency of ecosystems.

3. Producers always occupy the first trophic level in any food chain. Why?

Ans: Producers always occupy the first trophic level in any food chain because only producers have the ability to trap solar energy with the help of chlorophyll and synthesis their own food.

4. Justify the statement, The existence of plant life is integral to the continuity and development of most ecosystems.

Ans:

(1) Plants are the only link in the food chain that is capable of transferring inorganic chemicals into organic compounds for the consumption of other living organisms in the ecosystems.

(2) These nutrients are then transferred from one trophic level to another in a food web.

(3) If plants did not transfer these materials, animals would have been deprived of the nutrients required for their survival.

(4) There would have been no food chains and food webs in the absence of plants.

That is why it is said that the existence of plant life is integral to the continuity and development of most ecosystems.

5. What is a food web? State the significance of food web.

Ans:

A network of interconnecting food chains in a natural community of different organisms is called a food web.

Significance of food web:

(1) Food webs permit alternative foods.

(2) They ensure a better chance of survival of an organism, in case any of its food sources happens to be scarce.
