Shylock wants to take Bassanio and Antonio to a notary so that the three thousand ducats he will lend are officially stamped in front of an authority. When he takes Bassanio to the notary, he adds a little clause which says: If Antonio does not repay Shylock on the day they agree on, in the place they have named, for the sum of money fixed in their contract, the penalty will be a pound of Antonio's flesh, to be cut off and taken out of whatever part of his body Shylock likes.
