Main teachings of Jainism:
- The entire world is animated - even rocks, water and stones have life.
- Monastic condition is necessary for salvation. This can be achieved by renouncing the world
- Asceticism and penance are needed to free oneself from the cycle of karma
- Karma: Every action has a consequence. The cycle of birth and death is shaped through karma
- The principle of ahimsa - non injury to any living creature should be practised.
- Jainism preached equality and universal brotherhood. It stressed that all men and women are equal irrespective of their caste or creed. Compassion should be shown to even the smallest living creature.
