The people of the Early Vedic Period were basically pastoralists which means that they earned their livlihood by raising livestock. However, they were familier with sowing and harvesting.Reference to cultivation is made in the later part of the Rig Vedic period. There were artisans and craftsmen like weavers, carpenters, chariot makers, leather making, potters etc.

In the Later Vedic Peiod, agriculture began to be widely practised and became an important occupation of the people. Metals like iron also began to be used widely. There was an upsurge of diverse arts and crafts. We hear of smiths, smelters and jewellers.
