During the Later Vedic period, the joint family system was further strengthened. The birth of a son came to be welcomed by families and the position of the girl child deteriorated. During this period, women were considered inferior to men. They were not allowed to take part in political assemblies anymore and their highest duty came to be being servile to their husbands and taking care of their families. However, they continued to be a part of the religious ceremonies in general.
